Welcome! We offer the following resources for d/Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing patients who have a video visit at UCSF:

ASL

For patients who sign ASL and their medical record indicates ASL is their preferred language, video ASL interpreters are available for your visit.  You may use Zoom's pinning feature to keep the interpreter's video thumbnail stationary. For instructions, click here

Closed Captioning

Zoom video visits now have closed captioning available. If you need closed captioning, follow these steps:

  1. Once your provider starts the meeting, ask them to enable Live Transcription. You can ask via chat if needed. 
  2. On a smartphone, captions will automatically appear in the lower part of the screen.
  3. On a computer, click Live Transcript, then Show Subtitle.

If Zoom's closed captioning doesn't meet your needs, we suggest InnoCaption+ as an alternative:

Preparing for your visit

  1. Download the InnoCaption+ app from Google Play or the Apple App Store
  2. Open the app and register for an InnoCaption account (certify that you are d/Deaf or hard of hearing
  3. Give InnoCaption permission to access your microphone, notifications, location and contacts

Using InnoCaption+ at your video visit

  1. Open the app
  2. In the upper right corner, select "CA" as your Caption Mode. CA uses a live stenographer. You can also select CA Priority, which defaults to a live stenographer but may also use speech recognition software if a stenographer is not available.
  3. Join your provider's Zoom meeting from your computer.
  4. Use the InnoCaption+ app on your smartphone or tablet to dial in to the meeting. Find the meeting phone number under "Join Audio", then "Dial In". Note this phone number and meeting ID, then open the InnoCaption app and dial the number. 

Please note, patients need both a smartphone/tablet and a computer for this system. 

If you already use a captioning app on your smartphone, join a test meeting at https://ucsf.zoom.us/test and connect to your captioning app. 

Captioning Telephone Service (CTS/CapTel)

If you use a captioning telephone (CapTel), you can dial in to the video visit and read captions on your telephone.

To find the phone number for your video visit, follow these steps:

  1. Join your clinician's Zoom meeting, read or view instructions here: https://videovisit.ucsf.edu/
  2. From the Zoom tool bar, click "Join Audio", then "Phone Call". 
  3. On your CapTel phone, dial the phone number listed, and enter the Meeting ID and Participant ID when prompted.
